As many of Flamble's clients and partners already know, David Sherwood's daughter, Shona stands upon this planet thanks to the incredible work performed at the John Radcliffe Maternity and Paediatrics unit in Oxford.
Lorraine (David's wife) was in her 28th week of pregnancy with her first child when she became very ill and was admitted to High Wycombe Hospital with a soaring heart rate which the Doctors and Nurses could not control. On the verge of a heart attack, Lorraine was transferred later the same day to the John Radcliffe Hospital which is the regional center of excellence for Obstetrics. Diagnosed with suffering from Eclampsia, Lorraine and the embryo (at that point named 'Walnut') were monitored and the baby delivered the next day via emergency Cesarian Section.
Walnut weighed in at 1lb 3oz (623g) and was cared for in an incubator. A week after birth, she contracted a bowel infection followed by MRSA. But with unstinting care from the hospital staff and bloody minded determination from the as yet unknowing baby she recovered and began to grow. She lived in the incubator for the first three months of her life before her parents were able to take her home.
Now 18 years old, life without her would be unthinkable and because of this, Flamble donates once a year an item of computer equipment to help in running the underfunded unit at the John Radcliffe that carries out such incredible work for hundreds of babies every year in a similar position.
Here you can see Professor Redman in 2006 accepting a Toshiba laptop for use in the Silver Star unit (for critical mothers and babies) from Shona (10), Noah (8) and Jonah (5) all of whom have born and benefited from the sterling work of the Silver Star team.
